Luxury is an old car term which was originally reserved for select, expensive brands of cars. It was limited to specific types of vehicles, typically sports cars, but as time went on, the term changed. In 2022, luxury is no longer a brand specific term. Instead, it can be applied to any type of vehicle which use higher-quality materials and offer advanced features not normally found on other models. This can include a stronger engine or transmission, but also advanced safety features and comfortable amenities. While luxury cars are still valuable, the price range has become more reasonable. The cost can vary based on the brand, but most luxury vehicles begin at $40,000 and go as high as $100,000.
Luxury SUVs typically focus on improving performance. This includes using different types of metal for the body, improve ground clearance, four-wheel drive systems and a more powerful engine. The interior often features higher end materials and more cargo space than traditional SUVs. Listed below are several of the top redesigned luxury SUVs for 2022.
New vs. Redesigned
When discussing cars, the terms new and redesigned are sometimes mistakenly used interchangeably. While the terms have a similar meaning, there are differences. A redesigned car is built off of a previous model, but is upgraded to incorporate new technology and materials. Redesigned cars are often in higher demand because customers already know they enjoy the model based on driving an older version of the vehicle.
A new SUV refers to a completely new design. There may be some similarities with previous models, but at the core, the SUV is different from whatever cars the manufacturers previously produced. New cars are typically built with the latest materials and technology, but customers are less likely to purchase a new car until it develops a reputation.
2022 Cadillac Escalade
When it comes to luxury vehicles, Cadillac is often at the top of the list. Traditional Cadillac cars are known for their higher prices, but the Escalade was built with affordability in mind, at least by Cadillac standards. It still costs more than other luxury SUVs, with the basic trim starting at $77,000 and more advanced options costing as much as $103,000.
The standard trim features a powerful 6.2-liter, V8 engine with dynamic fuel management and variable valve timing. It also has a 10-speed automatic transmission, which can switch between standard driving and towing mode. Both the head and tail lamps are illuminated by LED bulbs. It is completely Bluetooth compatible, can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and features a large, 16.9 infotainment screen. While it is one of the larger luxury SUVs available, it still gets fair highway mileage, averaging between 25 to 27 miles. It is less efficient in the city, only getting around 20 miles.
2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
The Grand Wagoneer is technically classified as a redesigned SUV, but it has been almost 30 years since the last model was produced. The 2022 Grand Wagoneer is one of the most powerful luxury SUVs on the market, with a 6.4-liter 471 horsepower V-8 engine. Because it is a larger vehicle, it also boasts an impressive amount of cargo room, with almost 30 cubic feet. The front seats are heated, with the driver seat also boasting lumbar support and massage options. Both passenger and driver seats have 14 different reclining sections.
The Grand Wagoneer is loaded with safety features, including electronic and roll stability control, side impact beams, blind spot detection and warning and active lane management and assistance. All the power of the Grand Wagoneer comes with a tradeoff, only getting about 20 miles in both city and highway settings. The Grand Wagoneer only has a few trims available. This means most of the features are included in the base model, but it has a significantly higher starting price, beginning at $89,000.
2022 Lexus UX
If you are on a tighter budget but still want a luxury SUV, the Lexus UX is a great model. The UX is still considered a newer vehicle, with the first model introduced in 2019. Most of the changes in 2022 are entirely cosmetic, adding additional paint colors and making a few modifications to the body. While it has a smaller engine, it is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs on the market, getting around 35 miles driving on the highway, and 40 in the city. While the seats are roomier than previous versions, it has less storage space than other SUVs, with only 23 cubic feet. For many drivers, the biggest benefit of the UX is affordability, costing between $33,000 and $37,000.
2022 Genesis GV70
The GV70 is another new redesign, with the original coming out in 2021. It is a slimmer vehicle, but it still has an incredible amount of power thanks to the 2.5-liter 300 horsepower turbo charged engine. You can upgrade to an advanced trim with 375 horsepower and a V-6 engine. The GV70 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in under six seconds. Even though it has a slim frame, cargo space is not sacrificed, with almost 30 cubic feet available. Fuel economy does suffer, but not as bad as other luxury SUVs. On the highway, you can get about 30 miles per gallon on the highway, but only around 22 in the city. The GV70 is reasonably priced, going between $41,000 and $45,000 as of writing.
2022 Mercedes-Benz G550
If you want a top-of-the-line luxury SUV and have the money to spend, consider the G550. Mercedes-Benz has a reputation for producing the best luxury vehicles, and the G550 is no exception. With a twin-turbo 416 horsepower V-8 engine it can handle both city driving and rough terrain. It isn’t the most fuel-efficient vehicle, getting about 20 miles driving in the city or on a highway. The G550 has a roomy interior with plenty of cargo space, holding almost 40 cubic feet. While it is a comfortable and luxurious vehicle, it is also quite expensive, with the base trim starting around $130,000.
